Abstract:
Silver (Ag) is the only efficient catalyst for ethylene epoxidation providing the minimum of byproducts. The influence of the sizes of silver particles on the reaction rate is observed within particle sizes of 100–1000 Å. This effect is explained by the change of surface structure, silver particle morphology, and influence of support. The effects of all these factors, as well as Ag-particle-size distribution, cause the spread in the values of size effect as well as of crystal sizes so that the drastic change of the catalytic activity itself takes place. Supports characterized by large surfaces such as SiO2, TiO2, and η-Al2O3 are the most popular model supports for Ag catalysts. These supports allow obtaining highly dispersed silver catalysts with average particle diameter of 30–100 Å. Catalysts with a higher average size of Ag particles are quite polydisperse because it is very hard to get rid of small particles. The chapter presents a new synthesis procedure to produce catalysts with a rather uniform Ag-particle-size distribution. It describes a series of such samples with particle sizes ranging from 100–1000 Å. The chapter demonstrates the characterization of catalysts using X-ray, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), HREM, and oxygen chemisorption.
