Abstract: The no. of chain growth centers and propagation rate constant in polymerization of ethylene (I) in the presence of TiCl2 catalyst were independent of I concentration in the range 0.06-0.6 mole/l. The activation energy of chain propagation was 6.5 ± 0.5 kcal/mole. Preexponential factors were detected experimentally for chain propagation, chain transfer to the monomer in presence of chromium oxide catalyst, chain transfer to the monomer in presence of TiCl2 (all ∼105 l./mole sec), and for chain propagation in presence of TiCl2 (1.5 × 108 l./mole sec). These values were compared with the calculated ones for the formation of the π-complex according to the collision theory (7 × 108-7 × 109 l./mole sec) and the theory of abs. rates (3 × 104-3 × 105 l./mole sec), and interpreted in terms of reaction mechanism.
