Abstract: A method is described for studying the heterogeneity of acidic surface centers by high-temperature etching with a subsequent adsorption of basic indicator compounds. The form of the adsorbed compounds is identified spectrophotometrically. The 20:80 ZrO2-SiO2 and 20:80 MgO-SiO2 catalysts exhibit discrete heterogeneity of protonic acidic surface centers. Thus detected concentration of strongly acidic centers is markedly lower than the concentration detected by a titration with BuNH2. Diphenylcarbinol, triphenylcrbinol, and benzalacetophenone were used as the indicator adsorbents
