Abstract:
The activity and selectivity of the dual-function metal-zeolite catalysts in the hydrocracking of n-octane (I) was affected by the dispersity of the mutual distribution of the acidic (zeolite) and the hydrogenating (Ni) components. The hydrocracking of I at 350° with 16:1 H-I, space velocity 5-8 L/min gave 30-40% I conversion over 0.25-0.5 mm NiHY zeolite catalyst grains. The hydrogenation of 1-hexene at 150° over the NiHY catalyst indicated that the sp. catalytic activity of Ni did not depend on the dispersity and inclusion; it was approx. the same on NiHY as on Ni black (with a 3.6 m2/g surface area) on SiO2. The NiHY catalyst did not hydrogenate C6H6 or styrene. An increase in the hydrogenating surface in the mech. mixts. gave a 2-3 fold increase in the I hydrocracking rate. A similar increase in the NiHY catalyst gave a 100-fold increase in the I hydrocracking rate due to the attenuation of the diffusional retardation by the reaction products and the less extensive fouling (coking) of the zeolite channels. As the surface of NiHY increased so did the proportion of middle C-C bond cleavage in I. The effects of pressure and the hydrogenating activity of the NiHY catalyst were related. On catalysts incorporating a highly-acidic zeolite component, the hydrocracking of n-paraffins occurs as a 2 stage (hydrogenation and cracking) process in which the cracking state is rate limiting.
