Abstract: Mechanisms of the formation of the structure of SiO2 xerogel during drying of a hydrogel were studied with particular reference to the effects of capillary forces and interaction and growth of particles in various stages of the drying process. Limits of surface areas and porosity were detected and factors affecting the detns. are discussed.
