Abstract: Electron binding energies were detected for adsorbed CO 5σ, 1π, and 4σ orbitals. The CO desorption activation energy is 36.9 and 33.2 kcal/mol at coverages of 2.1 × 1014 and 7.0 × 1014 mol/cm2, resp. Adsorbed O forms (2 × 1) structures, not (2 × 2) as suggested from LEED studies, and is oriented with mols. at 120° to each other; max. surface coverage is 7.9 × 1014 atoms/cm2. A sharp decrease in adsorbed O concentration occurs >600 K, due to diffusion into the bulk Ir crystals since mass spectral studies show O desorption begins >800 K. NO is adsorbed as assoc. mols. (like CO) ≤293 K. Dissociation to N and O occurs on the surface as temp. increases. Exposure of Ir crystals to flowing NO at 570 K gives a surface covered with significant O atom concentrations with bond energy 529.8 eV. Introduction of CO enhances NO dissociation leading to lower O, but higher N atom surface concentrations. Catalytic effects on the NO-CO reaction are discussed.
