Abstract: Adsorption occurs via a weakly bonded pre-adsorbed state with surface coverage coeff. S = 0.09. The work function is a linear function of S with max. value 0.56 ± 0.04 eV. Appearance of a (2 × 2) diffraction pattern indicates formation of 3 anti-phase domains oriented at 120° to each other, with limiting surface O concn. 7.8 × 1014 atoms/cm2. The activation energy of CO2 formation is 10.5 kcal/mol and the Arrhenius factor ∼10-11 cm s-1. The small Arrhenius factor is consistent with LEED results indicating island formation with some islands of the order of 104 Å in size.
