Abstract: The structure of a recrystallized Pt surface and its effect on chemisorption of O, CO, and NO were studied by slow-electron diffraction, Auger spectroscopy, and thermodesorption with a mass-spectrometric analysis of desorption products. The initial adhesion coefficient (S0) of O on the stepwise faces was ∼0.1, whereas on (111) face S0 ≤10-3. CO adsorbs (without forming a structure) on stepwise and (111) faces at S0 = 0.45; and N adsorbs at S0 ∼1.0 (forming 2 × 2 structures) and desorbs as NO, N2, and O2. The Ca and Ba impurities at ≤0.3% monolayer did not affect the chemisorption.
