Abstract: Treatment of Aerosil and Al2O3 with (PhCH2)4Ti resulted in the formation of surface organotitanium compounds. Heating these compounds in vacuo at 130° for 0.5 h produced changes in the IR indicating a decrease in PhCH2 group content and the formation of PhCH2CH2Ph and PhMe. Treatment of the Ti compound derived from Al2O3 with H at 130° decreased the IR absorption attributed to PhCH2, but no formation of new compounds was detected. Hydrogenation of the compound derived from Aerosil produced changes in IR similar to those from heating, and also formed Ti hydrides, as confirmed by mass spectroscopy. The hydrides reacted with ethylene [74-85-1] under conditions for its polymerization.
