Because the insertion of CO into Ti-C bonds proceeds slowly, information for the detn. of the no. of propagation centers in Ti chloride-based polymn. catalysts can only be obtained by using radioactive CO. The main criterion for the quant. detn. of the no. of propagation centers is the independence of the detd. value of the rate const. when using several inhibitors of different types or when varying the conditions of the inhibition with one inhibitor. For catalysts based on TiCl2, the no. of radioactive tags in the polymer detd. by using 14CO at small exposure values corresponds to the no. of propagation centers. For catalysts based on TiCl3, the insertion of the 1st 14CO into the Ti-C bond was rapid enough for 5-10 min but further increase in the no. of tags in the polymer was due either to slow copolymn. of CO with monomer or to the regeneration of the active bond by organoaluminum compd.
