Abstract: Ir(IV) chloride complexes in aqueous solutions are found to catalyze the oxidation of alkanes by chromic acid. The reaction is first order with respect to the hydrocarbon concentration. The rate of C−H bond oxidation increases in the series primary C−H<secondary C−H<tertiary C−H.
