This chapter discusses the dependence of the n-octane hydrocracking rate on the hydrogenation activity of a metal component and of the metal stability to sulfur poisoning on the nature of the metal and support. The hydrocracking rate was determined in a flow-circulation system at 350° C, 20 atm, and H2:n-octane = 10:1. The stability to sulfur poisoning of metals, supported on zeolites, was characterized by the ratio of the rate constants of hexene-1 hydrogenation on pure and sulfide catalysts. The introduction of 0.05% sulfur into n-octane decreases both the hydrogenation rate of hexene-1 and the hydrocracking rate of n-octane. All the data lie on the same curve independently of the metal nature and sulfur presence. The common dependence of the hydrocracking rate on the activity of a metal component in hydrogenation reaction for both sulfided and nonsulfided catalysts indicates that the overall hydrocracking rate on zeolite catalysts is determined only by the level of activity of the metal component. This result is in agreement with the concept of the hydrocracking mechanism on zeolites, involving the paraffin dehydrogenation as a rate-determining step. Hence, the problem of creating hydrocracking catalysts on zeolites stable to sulfur poisoning is reduced to fixing a metal with a high hydro-dehydrogenation activity in the sulfided state.
