Abstract: In the present work, the electronic state of gold in Au/Al2O3 catalysts prepared by different methods was studied by diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy. In addition, resonance absorption of electromagnetic radiation (or plasmon absorption) by metallic gold particles and the UV-Vis spectra of model gold(III) complexes with Au–O–Au bonds were simulated. Our findings allow us to suggest that Au/Al2O3 catalysts contain, in addition to metallic gold, gold oxide clusters bound to the surface of the support.
