Abstract: Mechanochemical pre-treatment of the initial powder or addition of a binding agent (aq. Al oxynitrate) allows forming of catalysts from CuO powders prepared by thermal decomposition of malachite. The resulting increase in catalyst granule stability produces an increase in catalyst stability. The Al oxynitrate binder lowers catalyst stability by blocking CaO active surface sites (dislocation defects). Calcination at ≤973 K causes sintering and a decrease in the no. of active sites; this decreases catalyst activity. Introduction of Al2O3 enhances catalyst thermal stability. The optimum catalysts contain ≤10% Al2O3 and are formed into granules by mechanochemical activation of the powder and subsequent binding with H2O.
