Abstract: The features of the spatial distribution of complexes of Cu(II) in hydroalcoholic solutions of linear poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) at 77 K have been studied by ESR. The mean local concentration <C(M)> of the metal complexes in the volume of a random coil of PEI have been measured experimentally. The character of the variation of the mean volume V(M) occupied by the Cu(II) ions in a single random coil of PEI as a function of the ligand:metal ratio has been established. At the limiting level of the binding of Cu(II) V(M)BAR reaches a value of approximately 12 nm3, and the mean distance between the complexes r(M) is equal to 8.5 +/- 0.3 angstrom. It has been established with the aid of computer calculations of ESR spectra that the Cu(PEI) complexes have strong triaxial anisotropy of the g and A tensors, and the fraction of the copper complexes found in regions with a very high value of <C(M)>, i.e., associates, has been determined. The possibilities and restrictions of the proposed approach for measuring the values of <C(M)> and its accuracy have been discussed.
