Abstract:
The structural features of nanocryst. samples of Pr- or Gd-doped (5-30 at.%) ceria-zirconia (1:1)-based solid solns. prepd. by polymd. precursor (Pechini) route and calcined at 500° were studied by using XRD, EXAFS, and Raman spectrometry, while their surface features before and after Pt supporting were characterized by IR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO test mols. The effects of the nature and content of a dopant on the structural and surface features of studied systems as related to the oxygen mobility and catalytic activity in the reaction of methane selective oxidn. into syngas at short contact times were considered. Nanocryst. Pr- of Gd-doped ceria-zirconia fluorite-like solid solns. prepd. via the Pechini route can be described by a model of the cubic Fm3m structure with dopants occupying regular positions of Ce or Zr cations. Pr is present in both 3+ and 4+ states, so its doping effect was rather similar to that of Gd. Rearrangement of the local environment around doping cations at their high content decreases the lattice oxygen mobility, while disordering the surface layer and increasing the d. of domain boundaries. This helps to fix Pt2+ cations in the vicinity of some surface defects, and thus, to stabilize small Pt0 clusters in reaction media, while avoiding undesirable combustion of methane or syngas.
