Abstract: Recent advances in the selective oxidation of phenols have been surveyed with a focus on the environmentally benign catalytic oxidations with molecular oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and tert-butyl hydroperoxide. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalyst systems are covered. A selection of the most relevant results reported so far in the literature is provided.
