Abstract:
This chapter focuses on immobilization of early-transition-metal oxygen-anion nano-size clusters or polyoxometalates (POMs for short) which have received great attention as building blocks for designing heterogeneous selective oxidation catalysts due to a unique ensemble of properties, such as metal oxide-like structure, thermodynamic stability to oxidation and hydrolysis over a wide pH range, thermal stability, tunable acid and redox properties, etc. The apparent structural analogy of POMs and metal oxide surfaces allows the consideration of POMs as discrete, soluble fragments of extended metal oxide lattices which can be comprehensively investigated at the atomic level. The aim of this chapter is to summarize recent achievements in the preparation of stable polyoxometalate-based heterogeneous catalysts using different immobilization techniques, such as entrapment of POMs in a solid matrix by the sol–gel method, adsorption, electrostatic attachment, and covalent or dative anchoring to various supports. Catalyst characterization in such systems is reported, and the catalytic performances in liquid phase selective oxidation reactions are surveyed, with special attention to the questions of catalyst stability, nature of catalysis and recycling behavior. The scope and limitations of the POM-based heterogeneous catalysts are discussed.
