Abstract:
A comparative study has been made of the catalytic activity of MgO, NiO, and the solid solutions MgONiO and MgO-NiO- Li2O in the oxidation of CO. The catalytic activity of the MgO-NiO solid solutions is due to the presence of the nickel cations. The specific activity, calculated for one nickel cation, increases with increase in the dilution of the nickel. At the same time the width of the EPR signal from the Ni double ion cation decreases, indicating that the dilution is accompanied by a decrease in the interaction between the nickelations. The dissolution of lithium increases the activation energy of the reaction. The specific activity of pure nickel oxide remains greater than the activity of the MgO-NiO solid solutions, because of the decrease in the activation energy of the reaction. The results obtained are interpreted on the basis of the decisive influence of the local surface properties, determined by the chemical composition.
