Hydrocarbons reforming into CO free hydrogen rich gas for fuel cell was studied. The scheme consisted of one pot catalytic steam reforming of methane coupled with high temperature CO2 absortion using CaO sorbent. The sorption enhanced reforming of hydrocarbons over an admixture of CaO sorbent with a Ni catalyst in a fixed bed reactor was investigated. Reforming was performed using steam/carbon ratio of over 4:1 and at 1-5 atm and 500°-800°C in various proportions. The hydrogen purity was 98-99 vol.% with both CO and CO2 impurities level less 100 ppm. The results suggest that sorption enhanced reforming may be a perspective approach for hydrogen production in fuel cell powered cogeneration systems.
