Abstract:
Development of methods for elimination of air pollutants is important for keeping healthy ambient environment. Non-thermal plasma is a powerful technique which employs corona discharge (CD) or dielec. barrier discharges (DBD) as sources of active oxygen species for oxidn. of org. and inorg. compds. We utilized these types of discharges and their combinations with catalytic and photocatalytic oxidn. in order to decrease electricity consumption. Acetone, acetaldehyde, ethanol and toluene vapors were oxidized with formation of gaseous intermediates, in particular CO. The rate of oxidn. increased with the increase of the wire diam. for CD and the best was the neg. polarity. Combination of neg. CD and photocatalysis allowed decreasing energy consumption by a factor of from 1.2 to 3.6 while that of DBD and photocatalysis - by a factor of 1.5. Combination of CD with ozone destruction catalyst MnO2/TiO2 resulted in 4 times lower electricity consumption compared to CD alone.
