Being a carbon source, the utilization of carbon dioxide (CO2) became attractive from both
an environmental and economical perspective. However, CO2 is a very stable molecule, thus to
induce a reaction the activation of CO2 by catalysts is required [1]. One way of activating CO2 is
dry reforming of methane (DRM), when CH4 is reformed by CO2 on Ni or Pt particles supported
by zirconia (ZrO2). During DRM, CO2 is reduced to carbon monoxide (CO) via reaction
precursors or intermediates, which can further oxidize the carbon formed via CH4 dissociation.
Being a carbon source, the utilization of carbon dioxide (CO2) became attractive from both an environmental and economical perspective. However, CO2 is a very stable molecule, thus to induce a reaction the activation of CO2 by catalysts is required. One way of activating CO2 is dry reforming of methane (CH4), when CH4 is reformed by CO2 on Ni or Pt particles supported by zirconia (ZrO2). Such activation can occur on the ZrO2 or on the interfacial sites. We have employed in situ X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, in situ Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy and Temperature Programmed Desorption in order to examine the adsorption of CO2 (and H2O) on ZrO2 ultrathin film. Our study shows that CO2 adsorbs only weakly on ZrO2 ultrathin film and desorbs at low temperature. H2O can activate CO2 via hydrogenation and leads to the formation of formaldehyde, dioxymethylene and formate on the ZrO2 surface.
