Abstract: Spherical and monolithic supported Fe-containing catalysts were tested in a model reaction of H2S decomposition and purification of coke oven gases (COG) produced during carbonization of coal at a metallurgical plant. During activity tests in the reaction of H2S decomposition (1% H2S in Ar), the Fe-containing component of catalysts was transformed into iron sulfide, while the tests in COG purification process led to the formation of both iron sulfide and metal Fe due to the presence of hydrogen in COG mixture. Carbon-containing compounds of COG caused substantial coking of the supported spherical catalyst and impaired the catalyst performance at high temperatures. Monolith supported Fe-containing catalyst, having high resistance to coke formation, demonstrated stable operation at 800°C and were recommended for purification of COG produced during carbonization of coal at metallurgical plants.
