Abstract: The state of Rh in the supported catalysts prepd. via the adsorption of Rh4(CO)12 on SiO2, γ-Al2O3, and La2O3 was investigated by XPS, EXAFS, IR spectroscopy, and temp.-programmed redn. and desorption. The existence of pillbox shaped rhodium particles on La2O3 and a decrease of heat of CO desorption in comparison with Rh/SiO2 and Rh/Al2O3 catalysts are indicative of strong metal support interaction of Rh with La2O3. A high yield of oxygenated products for CO hydrogenation was characteristic for Rh/L2O3 catalysts. MeOH and EtOH formation proceeds through different mechanisms involving different catalytic sites.
