Abstract: The av. size of Co particles on hydrogenation catalysts obtained by thermal decompn. of Co2(CO)​8 on Ti-​hydride-​treated SiO2 is 1-​1.5 nm. Such finely dispersed Co has low affinity for adsorption of CO, thus having a low activity but a high selectivity for CO conversion to low-​mol.-​wt. alcs., mainly EtOH. Spectroscopic evidence (IR, NMR) suggests that the dissocn. of CO on catalysts with high Co dispersivity is slow; in contrast to the the catalyst on the Ti-​hydride-​SiO2 , the Co​/unmodified SiO2 catalyst has relatively large (10-​12 nm) Co particles. Even at ambient temp., CO dissocs. on its surface gives C deposits.
