Abstract: It has been established that the experimental values of the proton relaxation rates for paramagnetic complexes of nickel and cobalt of the type ML2 [HL = 1,3-diaryl-5-(3-chloro-2-quinoxalyl)formazans] are in good agreement with the values obtained from calculations based on x-ray diffraction data for the isostructural diamagnetic cadmium complex CdL2 under the assumption that the dipole-dipole interaction makes the predominant contribution to the rate of electron-nuclear relaxation of the nucleus under consideration, i.e., under the assumption that tau(1n)-1 approximately r-6, where tau(1n) is the relaxation time of the nucleus under consideration, and r is the distance from the metal cation (the unpaired electron) to that nucleus. The values of r in NiL2 calculated from the experimental values of tau(1n) differ from the analogous distances in CdL2 by +/- 7%.
