Abstract:
Gas-phase oxidn. of 5-ethyl-2-methylpyridine (MEP) was performed over cryst. nanoparticles of the well characterized V- Ti-O, V-Ti-K-O, and V-Ti-Mo-O catalysts in the continuous flow fixed bed reactor at 240-260°C, initial compn. of the reaction mixt. (% vol.) MEP-0.3, oxygen - 20, water vapor - 13, nitrogen - the rest; and contact time - 0.01-0.20s. All products were identified using mass spectrometry and gas chromatog. The main product of the reaction was found 6-methylnicotinic acid which was formed by the consecutive oxidn. of 2-methyl-5-pyridinecarboxaldehyde (intermediate product). Other partial oxidn. products such as nicotinic acid, 5-acetyl-2-methylpyridine, and 3-cyanopyridine were present in smaller amts. The byproducts were carbon dioxide, and compds. formed by condensation of MEP and partial oxidn. products. The increase in catalyst basicity by addn. of potassium oxide lead to improved selectivity for the acid and depressed selectivities for carbon dioxide and condensation products. The increase in catalyst acidity by addn. of molybdenum oxide resulted in decrease of acid selectivity and in rise of carbon dioxide as well as condensation products selectivities.
