BACKGROUND
Preparation of homogeneous oxide coatings on the surface of fiberglass is a difficult task due to hydrophobicity of the fiberglass support. NiO‐TiO2 cannot coat homogeneously on the surface of fiberglass. In this study, SiO2 was added in the NiO‐TiO2. A sol–gel method was used to prepare Ni‐Si‐Ti sol. It was used to coat on fiberglass and form a complex Ni‐Si‐Ti oxide system supported on the surface of the fiberglass. The catalyst was tested for hydrocarbon oxidation reaction.
RESULTS
The as‐prepared material is a mixture of titanium dioxide in the anatase modification and silicon dioxide in the amorphous phase. UV–vis DRS confirmed the presence of Ni2+Oh cations in the film bulk. Introduction of silica to the sample ensured a uniform distribution of Ni‐Ti oxide system on the fiber surface and its durable retention on the surface at 600 °C. The Ni‐Si‐Ti mixed oxide supported on glass fiber demonstrated a higher catalytic activity in oxidation of n‐heptane, compared to Ni‐Ti oxide/glass fiber catalyst. It is also stable even at 600 °C. The maximum n‐heptane conversion reached 93% at 600 °C.
CONCLUSION
Adding SiO2 in NiO‐TiO2 can coat on glassfiber homogeneously. SiO2 can coat on hydrophobic fiberglass, so NiO‐TiO2 can homogeneously coat on fiberglass. It is also very stable even at high temperature. This research provides a method to coat metal oxide catalyst on fiberglass. It is very active and stable, compared to that without adding SiO2.
