Abstract:
The aim of the work was to investigate changes in the fatty acid composition of red blood cells membranes (RBC) and serum (BS) in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) for possible differential diagnosis.
Methods. 18 patients with UC, 19- with CD (35.2 + 4.7 years) and 20 healthy controls were examined. The study of fatty acids (FAs) composition of RBC and BS was carried out using GC/MS system triple quad Agilent 7000B (USA). In BS of patients with UC reduced levels of myristin C14:0, α-linolenic C18: 3 n-3 and elevated levels of stearic C18:0, dihomo-γ-linolenic C20:3 n-6 were detected than those in healthy controls (p < 0.03-0.05); as for the membranes of RBC - a lower content of oleic C18:1; c9, elaidic C18:1; t9 and high level of C20:3 n-6 were determined (p <0.01-0.05) . In patients with CD the BS levels of C14:0, C16:2 n-6, C22:4 n-3 were lower, and arachidonic acid (AA) C20:4 n-6 were higher compared to the ones in controls (p <0.02-0.05). The data obtained allowed us to create a diagnostic panel for distinguishing the patients with UC and CD with sensitivity of 68% and specificity of 76%, which can be useful for the purposes of differential diagnosis.
