Abstract: The catalytic activity and stereospecificity of a supported catalyst system consisting of TiCl4-MgCl2-Et benzoate (I) catalyst and Al(iso-Bu)3 -Et anisate (II) cocatalyst were studied in the polymn. of propylene. I and II were used as stereoregulators in the prepn. of isotactic polypropylene (III) . The presence of I in the catalyst increased the isotacticity of III slightly and caused a drastic increase in the catalytic activity. In contrast, the presence of II decreased the catalytic activity while increasing the isotacticity of III due to indirect interactions between the free esters and the active sites on the catalyst. The deactivation of the catalyst was attributed to the redn. of Ti+4 to Ti+3 (a less active species) by the cocatalyst. The effects of different alkoxyaluminum compds. and different mole ratios of II/Al(iso-Bu)3 on the yield and isotacticity of III were detd.
