Abstract: The composition and structure of the title heteropoly acids in solution were studied. These compounds can act as liquid phase oxidation catalysts, but the compn. must be known to establish the mechanism of their reduction. Acids containing 1-4 V atoms were reduced by N2H4 hydrate and the resulting solutions were examined by ESR and electronic spectral methods. Since the degree of reduction is ~1 e/V in the heteropoly anion, there must be a dissocn. equiliubrium producing VO2+(stepwise depending on the no. of V atoms in the anion).
