Abstract: The features of the catalytic steam cracking (CSC) process of high-sulfuric heavy oil (HO) (Tatarstan, Russia) in the presence of dispersed Mo-containing catalysts heavy oil are investigated. Thermal cracking (TC), steam cracking (SC), catalytic cracking in the absence of water (CC) and hydrocracking (HC) processes were carried out to study the effect of water, the presence of the catalyst and the process conditions (temperature, the use of steam or hydrogen) on composition and properties of HO conversion products. Solid products (coke) were investigated by HRTEM, XRD and XANES/EXAFS. A comparative study of the efficiency of catalytic steam cracking and hydrocracking of heavy oil into low-viscoussemisynthetic oil was conducted. The main changes taking place with the catalyst in the investigated processes were considered. The assumptions are made about the principle of the catalytic action ofmolybdenum-containing dispersed catalyst in the process of catalytic steam cracking
