Abstract:
Doping of carbon support with nitrogen led to an increase of the rate of hydrogen production from formic acid over 1 wt% Cu or Pd catalysts by 3-4 times. This was provided by the appearance of new active metal sites. The nature of these species was elucidated by atomic resolution HAADF/STEM, XPS, NEXAFS and CO chemisorption methods. A part of these sites represents electron-deficient single metal atoms strongly
interacting with nitrogen species of the support like in complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline ligand. DFT calculations demonstrated the reactivity of such Pd single atom with respect to the formic acid molecule.
