Abstract:
Liquid phase pentanoic acid hydrogenation in decane as a solvent (150-180ºC, pressure 1-25 bar) was studied over Ir and IrRe catalysts supported on alumina, ceria and zirconia. Conversion of pentanoic acid increased in the order Ir/CeO2 < Ir/ZrO2 < IrRe/ZrO2 < IrRe/Al2O3. Selectivity to pentanol increased in the sequence Ir/Al2O3 < Ir/CeO2 ~ Ir/ZrO2 < IrRe/ZrO2 < IrRe/Al2O3. Among the studied catalysts IrRe/Al2O3 demonstrate the highest 1-pentanol yield. Experiments over the most active IrRe/Al2O3 catalyst with different Ir sizes varied from 0.8 to 3.2 nm showed an increase of catalytic activity with an increase in with the nanoparticle size in agreement with literature data for stearic acid hydrodeoxygenation over Ru catalysts.
