Abstract: In this work, the Ni–Mg–O oxide system was studied as a constituent of the joint Ni–Mg–O/V–Mg–O catalytic system in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane. A sol–gel method was used to synthesize the samples in order to achieve high textural characteristics of the system and a uniform distribution of NiO particles in the matrix of magnesium oxide. It was demonstrated that the addition of the Ni–Mg–O component led to a significant increase in the yield of ethylene at temperatures of 600–650C. In this case, selectivity did not decrease significantly. The redox properties of Ni–Mg–O were studied in the cycles of temperatureprogrammed reduction in an atmosphere of hydrogen or carbon monoxide and subsequent reoxidation with atmospheric oxygen. It was shown that the Ni–Mg–O system can repeatedly uptake hydrogen and convert CO; this fact makes it possible to consider this material as a promising agent for chemical looping. The observed increase in the yield of ethylene was due to the uptake of hydrogen released at the stage of ethane dehydrogenation and the related shift of thermodynamic equilibrium.
