Abstract: The composition of coal tar from the laser pyrolysis of coal is investigated. By gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, it is found that, for higher coal rank, more components are present in hexane solutions of coal tar. Coal tar from OS (Russian coal classification system, low volatile bituminous coal in ASTM classification) coal contains aromatic hydrocarbons and acyclic hydrocarbons of linear structure, whereas tar from SS and T coal (Russian coal classification system, low volatile bituminous coal and semianthracite respectively in ASTM classification) contains aromatic hydrocarbons, acyclic hydrocarbons of linear structure, and esters.
