Abstract: The rapid decline of fossil carbon resources requires the development of new alternative energy strategies. Hydrogen is considered as one of the most promising energy carriers of the future due to its higher energy density as compared to traditional fuels. The development of hydrogen energy will also help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Photocatalytic hydrogen production is one of the most promising ways of converting solar energy into the energy of chemical bonds. In the future, this will allow switching to alternative energy sources using only renewable components: solar radiation, water, and biomass. Currently, the most common photocatalysts are materials based on titanium dioxide, the main disadvantage of which is the absorption of radiation only in the UV range, while the use of visible light looks more promising. Promising photocatalysts operating under the action of visible light are cadmium sulfide and materials based on it, such as Cd1-xZnxS. This chapter discusses features of the use of sulfide photocatalysts in the production of hydrogen as well as methods for their synthesis. The possibility of using these photocatalysts for the production of hydrogen using complex substrates, such as polysaccharides and starch, the use of which is of great practical interest, is shown.
