In the present work, the process of ethane dehydrogenation over the Ni–Mg–O/V–Mg–O catalytic system prepared by a sol–gel method was studied in detail. The simultaneous use of the V–Mg–O oxide component, which catalyzes the target dehydrogenation reaction, and the Ni–Mg–O oxide component, which is capable of absorbing the released hydrogen, leads to a significant increase in the yield of ethylene. The activity of the Ni–Mg–O system was also studied in expectable side reactions such as ethane hydrogenolysis and ethylene decomposition with carbon deposition. The maximum values of ethane conversion in the hydrogenolysis reaction were observed in a temperature range of 440–560°C, while the sample was almost inactive at temperatures above 625°C. On the other hand, the maximum yield of carbon was observed upon the decomposition of ethylene at elevated temperatures (670°C). As shown by the TPR-H2 method, nickel was reduced from a NixMg1 – xO solid solution in the Ni–Mg–O system predominantly due to its interaction with hydrogen released during the dehydrogenation of ethane over the V–Mg–O catalyst. The data obtained confirmed the assumption that methane is formed by the interaction of hydrogen with carbon deposits on metallic nickel.
