Abstract:
At present, the polarity of chromatographic stationary phases is estimated using the linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) model developed by Abraham. The model implies that each type of intermolecular interactions contributes to the retention of analytes. By now, almost all stationary liquid phases have been characterized in terms of this model. However, solid stationary phases (adsorbents) applied in the PLOT columns have not been studied within this model as yet. Our study considers capillary columns with the sorbents of different chemical nature, which are based on divinylbenzene-styrene copolymer (columns DVB/St, HP-PLOT Q, Rt-Q-BOND Rt-S-BOND, Rt-U-BOND, VIm30, and VIm50), poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (columns PTMSP and PTMSP/N2O), and organic-inorganic polymer containing silica (VTEOS50 column). This study on the PLOT columns with the porous layer of different sorbents revealed that the tested sorbents have nearly equal ability to form dispersion interactions, which is caused by the presence of methyl groups in their structure. The ability of all the sorbents to π-π and n-π interactions is approximately similar. Dipole-dipole interactions are most pronounced for Rt-U-BOND, which contains ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and also for VIm50, which contains imidazole fragments. The most active proton acceptor is represented by the VIm50 sorbent, while the organic-inorganic sorbent VTEOS50 serves as a proton donor. Among the tested sorbents, the lowest polarity was found for PTMSP and PTMSP/N2O. The obtained data allow choosing PLOT columns for separating mixtures of different chemical classes compounds.
