Abstract: IR spectroscopy of two supports was used for the determination of their surface acidity. The presence of Lewis acid sites on the surface of sepiolite allowed the preparation of a catalyst able to transform citral into menthol in fairly good yield under very mild conditions (90°C, 1 bar H2).
