Abstract: A nyerereite is a carbonate mineral with chemical composition (Na,K)2Ca(CO3)2 and incommensurately modulated crystal structure. Its structure can be described using (3 + 1)-dimensional superspace group Cmcm(α00)00s with modulation vector q = 0.374(1)a*. Here we present the high pressure study of a synthetic nyerereite up to 8.2 GPa, based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The value of modulation vector q is independent of applied pressure and retains a value of about 0.374a*. The present investigation shows no significant changes in modulation parameters of all atomic sites in the studied pressure range. The third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state was used to fit PV data with V0 = 559.2(8) Å3, K0 = 30.0(11) GPa, ′ 0 = 6.4(5); the value of bulk modulus is significantly lower than for other known carbonates with a similar composition, which also manifests itself in relatively low values of mode Gruneisen parameters.
