Abstract: The reactions between the product of centrifugal thermal activation of gibbsite (CTA-GB) and aqueous solutions of nickel or cobalt nitrate were studied over a wide range of active component concentrations (15–50 wt %). According to powder X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis data, the synthesis products are layered double hydroxides and pseudoboehmite. The conversion of CTA-GB in an aqueous medium without nickel or cobalt gives only pseudoboehmite. The influence of nickel in solutions is manifested as complete absence of pseudoboehmite formation. In the case of cobalt, pseudoboehmite is formed up to cobalt concentration of 30 wt %, while at higher concentrations (40, 50 wt %), no pseudoboehmites are formed either. According to the results of temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen, heat treatment at 350–850°C affords mixed NiO/nickel aluminate and Co3O4/cobalt aluminate products, which are almost completely converted to NiAl2O4 and CoAl2O4 type spinels at 850°C, and their synthesis based on CTA-GB products is possible without conventional co-precipitation (sol–gel process)
