Environmental pollution by accumulated sewage sludge, which is continuously generated at wastewater treatment plants, is a pressing issue. The adverse properties of sewage sludge (high moisture content, significant emission of hazardous products during combustion, etc.) often pose key limitations to disposal technologies. This study focuses on investigating the feasibility of implementing thermocatalytic treatment of sewage sludge in a fluidized bed with an organizing grid as an alternative to conventional CFB and BFB technologies. The proposed technology involves the use of CuCrMg/Al2O3 catalysts and was developed at the Institute of Catalysis SB RAS. During the study, a stepwise scaling-up of the process of sewage sludge deep oxidation in a fluidized bed was carried out, culminating in the implementation of a pilot plant with a capacity of 4–4.8 tons/hour. The commissioning tests carried out at the pilot plant have proven the possibility of sewage sludge combustion in an autothermal regime using the technology of thermocatalytic oxidation in a fluidized bed. It was demonstrated that applying this technology at a temperature of 750 °C ensures a high degree of sludge burnout (99 %) while maintaining low concentrations of harmful emissions in flue gases (CO – no more than 1000 mg/m3, NO and NO2 – no more than 1600 mg/m3, and zero dioxin emissions in DE). Furthermore, the low toxicity of ash residues (hazard class IV) was confirmed, underscoring the high potential of thermocatalytic technology for the utilization of municipal wastewater sewage sludge.
