Abstract: The effect of an addition of 1 wt% of modifying agents (Si, B, La, Zr) to pseudoboehmite, which was prepared by eco-friendly and resource-saving method, on the physico-chemical characteristics and activity of CoMo/Al2O3 HDT catalysts has been studied. Pseudoboehmites, supports and catalysts were investigated by XRD, SEM, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, FTIR spectroscopy, UV–Vis DRS, Raman spectroscopy, EDX, HRTEM, XPS. Catalysts were tested in hydrotreating of straight-run gasoil and straight-run vacuum gasoil. It is found that modifying agents change the size of primary and secondary pseudoboehmite particles that further predetermine textural properties. Modifying agents affect hydroxyl coverage of alumina in different ways. It further affects the amount of inactive Co compounds. Testing of the catalysts showed that the effects of modification on active component improve catalysts hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation activity in straight-run gasoil hydrotreating in all cases, while the activity in hydrotreating of straight-run vacuum gasoil is significantly worsened by decreased access of Mo in catalysts volume. In both cases, the B addition to pseudoboehmite was the best way to improve hydrotreating activity
