Abstract:
The electrochemical separation of pure hydrogen from the products (reformate) of steam reforming of methanol, dimethoxymethane and dimethyl ether (oxygenates) was studied in a unit comprised of a catalytic reactor and downstream hydrogen pump with a proton-conducting membrane based on polybenzimidazole. It was shown that at complete conversion of oxygenates and a 90 % separation of pure hydrogen from reformate, the energy efficiency of the hydrogen pump exceeds 75 %. The device provides a hydrogen productivity of ∼6500 ml/h and the hydrogen purity of 99.96 vol%.
