Abstract:
Titania supported catalysts containing noble metals are widely used in photo(electro)catalysis, however, the questions about the position of their energy levels (flat-band potentials) and their influence on activity remain important. For titanium dioxide (P25) catalysts containing noble metals (Pt, Pd, Au) demonstraiting absorption in the visible region as obtained by UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, the catalytic properties were investigated in photoelectrooxidation of glycerol aqueous solution. The photocurrents were observed in the wavelength region ranging from 370 nm to 450 nm with the maximum activity found at 370 nm for all catalysts. Glyceraldehyde, glyceric, hydroxypyruvic, tartronic and mesoxalic acids were detected as products of glycerol oxidation. The Faradaic efficiency of the most common product – glyceric acid reaches ∼100 %, and the total Faraday efficiency exceeded 100 %, that must be due to the occurrence of additional photooxidation processes. The flat-band potentials of M/P25 samples were analyzed by set of photoelectrochemical methods. Photocurrent onset potential method proved unsuitable for determination of flat-band potentials of metal-containing catalysts due to the lack of an onset potential transition to zero photocurrents. It was found that regardless the type of noble metal (Pt, Pd, Au) and its content (from 0.01 to 1 mass.%), the flat-band potential values of the supported catalysts M/P25 are usually 0.1÷0.3 V higher than that of P25. Correlation has been established between the Faradaic efficiencies in photoelectrooxidation of glycerol and the flat-band potentials of the catalysts.
