This study investigates the influence of counterbody material and sliding speed on the tribological behavior of titanium diboride (TiBx) coatings with different boron-to-titanium ratios (B:Ti = 3.3 and 2.3) deposited by dual magnetron sputtering in a high-power impulse magnetron sputtering mode. The TiB2.3 coating demonstrates superior mechanical properties, with a hardness of 42 GPa, a plasticity index (H/E) of 0.12, and a high resistance to plastic deformation (H3/E2) of 621.5 MPa, compared to the TiB3.3 coating (hardness 32 GPa, H/E = 0.11, H3/E2 = 386.4 MPa). Tribological tests using SiC, Si3N4, and 100Cr6 counterbodies under varying sliding speeds reveal that the counterbody material significantly affects friction coefficients and wear rates. The lowest friction coefficient (∼0.6) and wear rates were observed with the SiC counterbody, attributed to its high hardness and chemical inertness. For the steel counterbody, increasing the sliding speed reduces the size of the wear scar on the counterbody surface and promotes the formation of oxinitride layers, which contribute to reduced wear. Ceramic counterbodies exhibit diverse wear responses depending on material and sliding conditions. The results elucidate the complex interplay between coating composition, mechanical properties, counterbody selection, and operational parameters, providing insights for optimizing TiBx coatings for wear-resistant applications.
