Abstract: In this paper, we report the observation of unusual bulk amorphization that occurs within the initial gibbsite microcrystals when exposed to microwave radiation. A specific feature of this amorphization is the formation of small aluminum–oxygen complexes [AlO4], presumably of atomic size, chaotically distributed in the second product of gibbsite dehydration, water. By analogy with TCA and CTA, this method to enhance the reactivity of solid reagents is referred to as microwave activation.
