Реферат: In this paper, we apply the site blocking approach for studying structural effects in electrocatalysis. We utilize gold as a site blocking element and investigate the CO monolayer oxidation as a model structure-sensitive surface reaction on nanostructured electrodes prepared by Pt electrodeposition. The evolution of the hydrogen UPD with the gold coverage suggests that Au adatoms sequentially block (100) terraces and steps, then (110) steps, and finally (111) facets. This leads to a systematic shift of the CO-stripping peaks towards positive potentials. Investigation of the carbon monoxide dosing in situ with infrared spectroscopy provides information on the influence of Au adatoms on the formation of COads adlayers. We conclude that an exceptionally high activity of nanostructured Pt electrodes prepared by electrodeposition results from the presence of low-coordinated defect sites which are presumably located at the emergence of grain boundaries at the surface. These defects on the one hand serve as active sites for the formation of active oxygen-containing adsorbates, and on the other hand prevent formation of densely packed CO islands.
