Abstract: Catalytic properties of silica-supported Fe-containing catalysts in H2S oxidation have been correlated with their surface composition characterized by XPS. This allows us to show that iron sulfate supported on silica is active in sulfur production with 100% selectivity, whereas the decrease in selectivity to sulfur is accompanied by the appearance of iron disulfide phase in the catalyst.
